COOPS CLOSES IN ON SCORING RECORD

"Coops" as he is known to players, fans and referees everywhere has an ambition. To beat the all time club goalscoring record of 216, set by legendary Dave Whitehead in the 1990's. Although Coops' career has briefly taken him away from Hertingfordbury Park on a couple of occasions, he has clocked up well over 200 appearances, and his hugely impressive strike rate over a number of years has resulted in him putting Dave's record seriously under threat.
Starting the current season on 170 goals, a target of 47 goals looked challenging, if he was to finish the job this season. But he scored more than that last season, so maybe it was on? His prolific partnership with Ryan Redford last season continued as before, but both strikers hit lean spells after Christmas, with Redford eventually jumping ship to join neighbours Ware. Coops had nevertheless reached 38 goals for the season as he took the field at Holmer Green on Saturday, 208 in all. It might have been his birthday, as the generous home defence allowed him the freedom of the park, and he netted three times to bring his tally to 211. He missed three more good chances too!
So, three games to go, six more goals needed to set a new record. Can he do it? They are all at home, but against sterner opposition than Saturday's - Langford, Hanwell Town, and title chasing Chalfont St Peter. Chalfont could come to Hertingfordbury Park on the 26th needing a win to be champions. They have spoiled our party several times in recent seasons - perhaps it's our turn to spoil theirs, and maybe celebrate Coops' new record at the same time!
