SATURDAY 7 APRIL 2007 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION
HERTFORD TOWN 2 HARINGEY BOROUGH 1

Hertford made just the one change from the team which won so well last time out, with Luke Smith coming in for Ryan Wade in midfield. Haringey, hammered 9-0 in the corresponding away fixture earlier in the season, were on a run of 4 games unbeaten as they strove to get away from the relegation positions.

Teams: Hertford Town - 1. Mark Virgo, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Ashley McAloon, 4. Kevin Kilroy, 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Luke Smith, 7. Panayiotis Panayiotou, 8. Phil Goss, 9. Ryan Reford, 10. Kevin Cooper (capt), 11. Lee Roberts. Subs Used: 12. Paul Taylor (for Cooper, 87), 16. Ryan Wade (for Panayiotou, 73), 17. Michael Bakare (for Roberts, 86).

Haringey Borough: 1. Jamie Brown, 2. Barrington Woolcock, 3. Kayode Ajayi, 4. Mark Maher, 5. Abu Umar, 6. Chris Perifimou (capt), 7. Rashid Kamara, 8. Alfred Kamara, 9. Daniel Tullock, 10. Onaldo Peixoto Dos Santos, 11. Johnnie Offei. Subs Used: 12. Michael Christodoulou (for Alfred Kamara, 68), 16. Marcus Samuels (for Perifimou, 82).

Haringey won a corner within 10 seconds of the start, and when Mark Maher floated the ball over, Daniel Tulloch played it on to Alfred Kamara, who inexplicably missed from a yard out. This scare woke Hertford up, and they went on to dominate the opening period. Borough conceded a 3rd minute free kick in a dangerous position, and were nearly caught out when Kevin Kilroy quickly played the ball to Phil Goss while the visitors were still arguing with the referee. Although Goss got behind the Haringey defence, he was only able to fire the ball straight across goal.
On 7 minutes there was a shout for a penalty when the ball struck a Haringey defender, and when the ball fell to Kevin Cooper, his lob fell just behind the crossbar. Cooper did have the ball in the net with a smart shot from outside the box, but the effort was disallowed as he was marginally offside as he received the ball. A minute later Ryan Redford won a corner which Luke Smith headed into the gratefull arms of 'keeper Brown. Haringey were relying on speedy breakaways, but their finishing when they got them was abysmal. Ryan Redford was fouled by Kayode Ajayi two yards from the goal-line just outside the penalty area. When Goss took the kick, he found Redford, whose header crashed against a defender out to Lee Roberts. The winger did well to pick out Phil Goss at the far side of the box but Goss was unable to direct his shot at the goal. Then Redford saw another shot blocked by the busy Haringey 'keeper and Phil Goss' shot was deflected for a corner.
Keeper Brown made a fine flying save to thwart Kevin Cooper and Redford's follow up was deflected for yet another corner as it looked like it was only a matter of time before the Blues opened their account. The opener very nearly came when, following a Haringey free kick, Mark Virgo cleared the ball down the field and Ryan Redford used his speed to get away and cross to Phil Goss. The midfielder headed back across goal but the ball narrowly went the wrong side of the far upright.
Haringey won a corner n 22 minutes, and Daniel Tulloch was very unlucky when his header went just the wrong side of the post. This should have been another wake-up call for the casual Blues, but on 24 minutes they went a goal down, when Tulloch crossed from the left, and picked out JOHNNIE OFFEI at the right hand corner of the 18 yard box. Offei coolly slotted past Mark Virgo with a really clinical stike to give the visitors a shock lead.

Kevin Cooper was booked for dissent as Haringey won another free kick. Hertford continued to press, but the goal had given Haringey more confidence, and they managed to keep the home side at bay until half time. Indeed they had a good chance to increase their lead, but more terrible finishing by Rashid Kamara put paid to that.

Half Time: Hertford Town 0 Haringey Borough 1

Hertford came out for the second half intent on getting level at the first opportunity, and it only took 3 minutes to do so. Redford was fouled for the umpteenth time, and when Lee Roberts floated over the free kick, the ball bounced about in the 6 yard box, keeper Brown made a marvellous save from KEVIN COOPER, but the ace finisher eventually forced the ball home.
Two minutes later and this time it was Abu Umar who felled Redford, in the same spot as the previous offence. Roberts dispatched a similar free kick but this time it was collected by the 'keeper. Borough's Dos Santos was booked on 53 minutes and then both Panayiotou for Hertford and Rashid Kamara for Haringey were booked as they clashed while waiting for a free kick to be taken. Temperatures were becoming raised, as both sides struggled to get something from a game equally important to both. Another Phil Goss effort was scrambled away and then it was Mark Maher's turn to bring Ryan Redford down as the Borough defenders rotated the task. Kevin Kilroy tried his luck direct from 30 yards, and the ball almost scraped the crossbar as it flew over. Haringey sent on Michael Christodoulou for Alfred Kamara on 68 minutes and then, a minute later, Ryan Redford was blatantly tripped in the 18 yard area but the referee waved away the frantic appeals for a penalty.
Dave Greenwood decided to shake things up after 73 minutes and Ryan Wade came on for Panayiotou. His impact was immediate, as he won the ball a couple of times in midfield and then, on 76 minutes, he worked his way into the penalty area on the left, cut in and fired a magnificent strike on the angle through the packed box into the roof of the net. The reponse from the crown was immediate, and Wade ran over to the Mound to receive their adulation.
The game was won now, as Haringey were unable to mount any serious threats on the home goal. They sent on Marcus Samuels for injured skipper Perifimou on 82 minutes, and Hertford responded by replacing Lee Roberts with ex-Haringey man Michael Bakare. Ryan Redford was desperate to score his customary goal, but it was not going to be the day to get his 50th of the season. Kevin Cooper came off to an ovation to be replaced by Paul Taylor, and the home fans were treated to the novel sight of their team holding possession at the corner flag to wind the clock down. Indeed the game ended thus.
