TUESDAY 20 MARCH 2007 - EAST ANGLIAN CUP
HERTFORD TOWN 2 TIPTREE UNITED 0
A bitterly cold wind caused many to stay away for this quarter final clash, with the attendance of 44 being the lowest for several years. Several regular first teamers were rested, with Virgo, Ardiles, Turner, Cooper, Goss and Roberts not starting. Ex Witham Town man Gino Defoe started for Tiptree.
Team: 1. Nick Barnaby, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Ashley McAloon, 4. Kevin Kilroy, 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Ryan Wade, 7. Luke Smith, 8. Tony Neilson, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Panayiotis Panayiotou, 11. Michael Bakare. Subs Used: 12. Phil Goss (for Marsh, 88), 14. Lee Roberts (for Bakare, 75)
Hertford's much changed line-up left it very late to score and save the freezing supporters from extra time. The home side threatened after 5 minutes when Ryan Redford made a good run down the left but Tony Neilson was unable to get a good strike in from his pass. Ten minutes later the same combination saw Neilson's chip from an acute angle miss the target.
Michael Bakare was the next to try his luck, from fully 30 yards, before Tiptree's Richard Manning tested Nick Barnaby at the other end. After 24 minutes, Pany Panayiotou headed narrowly wide from Kevin Kilroy's free kick but a minute later Ashley McAloon had to kick off the line as after Tiptree nearly cashed in as Barnaby was caught out of his goal. When Tony Neilson finished off his own good run with a shot, he was unlucky to see it strike Panayiotou.
Then, although Panayiotou had the ball in the net on 31 minutes after a good through ball from Ryan Redford, he was ruled offside. Chris Bryan had a free header for Tiptree, but it was deflected for a corner. Pany Panayiotou was booked on 42 minutes, and in a final flurry, Redford, Neilson and Bakare all saw their shots go wide of the goal.
Half Time: Hertford Town 0 Tiptree United 0
Nicky Marsh became the second Hertford player to be booked, then Pany Paniotou hit a post as Hertford looked for the opener. Then Nick Barnaby was required to make a good stop at the feet of Gino Defoe as the visitors hit back. Tony Neilson's pass found Ryan Redford, but his ball into the middle was a waste, as no-one was there to finish. On the hour Tiptree's Defoe was shown a straight red, apparently for a two footed challenge on Nicky Marsh. Hertford were raining shots in on the Tiptree goal, without reward, with efforts from Ryan Wade, Michael Bakare and Ryan Redford all missing the target. Lee Roberts came on to replace Michael Bakare on 75 minutes and he caused a panic in the Tiptree defence when his shot hit a defender and first Tony Neilson and then Ryan Redford got in strikes without success. With extra time looming, the Blues finally made the breakthrough on 82 minutes, when Nicky Marsh crossed from the left, Paniotou cleverly left the ball and LUKE SMITH was there to shoot under the 'keeper in the centre of the goal.
The game was wrapped up on 86 minutes, as Lee Roberts crossed to PANAYIOTIS PANAYIOTOU, who chipped over the oncoming Tiptree 'keeper to make it 2-0 and book a home semi-final ti with Canvey Island based side Concord Rangers. Phil Goss came on in place of Nicky Marsh for the last few minutes, and Glenn Draper became th ethird Hertford player booked.
Final score: Hertford Town 2 Tiptree United 0
