MONDAY 22 JANUARY 2007 - HERTS SENIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL
HERTFORD TOWN 0 BARNET 1

Hertford were robbed of extra time when the referee contoversially gave a free kick on the edge of the Hertford box, with over 90 minutes on the clock, and then gave an equally controversial penalty when the ball was driven at pace against Nicky Marsh's arm. Brazilian Magno Vieira duly scored and then seconds later was shown a straight red card for a foul on Kevin Cooper which looks like putting him out of next Saturday's game at Langford.

A good Monday night attendance of 287 saw an absorbing game with not a lot of chances for either side. Barnet, whose manager Paul Fairclough had begun his illustrious managerial career at Hertford in the 1980's, fielded a young side with a smattering of players with first team experience, but were clearly a bigger challenge than most of the sides faced this season. Most of the early attacks from Hertford were down the right and fetured Phil Goss, who had three efforts in the first 12 minutes. Mark Seller was booked on 16 minutes for a seemingly innocuous challenge, and Barnet's skipper Anthony Charles shot wide from the free kick. Barnet's best early effort came from 17 year old Oliver Kingomzila, who turned and shot smartly, only to see his effort go wide of the post.
With chances few and far between, Barnet's Rickelle Christian was booked for a foul on Lee Roberts and then, as The Bees upped their workrate a little, Adam Gross and then Anthony Charles had shots which didn't trouble Hertford. On 36 minutes, Hertford's best effort to date came when Mark Seller's shot rebounded off 'keeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz. Just before half time, Phil Goss saw Jaimez-Ruiz out of his goal and tried a 45 yard lob, but the Venezuelan Under 21 International got back in time to collect the ball over his head.

Barnet's Anthony Charles was booked for a foul on Ryan Redford on 55 minutes and Hertford were finding it hard going against a quick, hard tackling Barnet side.. Anthony Charles was demonstating his full time fitness by being all over the pitch, and it was he who powered in a 65th minute header which Nick Barnaby held on to. Panayiotis Panayiotou was replaced by Ryan Wade on 67 minutes. Nick Barnaby pulled off a fine save on 70 minutes, from that man Charles, after the referee had, not for the first time, awarded a seemingly harsh free kick against Glenn Draper. Barnet brought off Harry Hunt on 74 minures, and sent on Jackson Fossi. Gianlucca Paladino became the third Barnet player to be booked, on 73 minutes, for a foul on Lee Roberts. Roberts gave way to Michael Bakare on 75 minutes. Barnet had the ball in the net on 78 minutes, but there was a clear foul on home 'keeper Barnaby. Then, with 84 minutes on the clock, Ryan Redford had his one and only clear chance of the game, when he found himself clear with the ball in front of goal, teed up his shot, but fired high over the bar. Nick Turner saved the day With an interception for a corner, as The Bees looked to finish the game in normal time. Hertford were unable to get the ball away, and then, with fully six minutes of added time played, the referee again took a dislike to Glenn Draper and awarded Barnet a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area, when all that he appeared to do was win the ball with a stooping header against the much smaller Gianlucca Paladino. Barnet's Brazilian, Magno Vieira, struck the free kick firmly into the home wall, and the ball struck the arm of Nicky Marsh. To the utter dismay of the Hertford players, management and supporters, alike, the referee immediately awarded a penalty. MAGNO VIEIRA duly dispatched the spot kick to put Barnet a goal up. There was practically no time left for Hertford to respond, but there was time for goalscorer Vieira to be shown a straight red card for stamping on Kevin Cooper. Tony Neilson had come on for Mark Seller, but there was no more time left, and a game which had looked certain to go to extra time had been settled in most controversial fashion.
