WEDNESDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2006 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIV CUP
BIGGLESWADE TOWN 0 HERTFORD TOWN 2
Manager Dave Greenwood made a couple of changes for this second round tie, played at Bedford & Valerio's ground. Adrian Robinson started in midfield for the unavailable Pani Panayiotou, and teenage 'keeper Nick Barnaby made his first start in place of Mark Virgo.
Team: 1. Nick Barnaby, 2. Ashley McAloon, 3. Pablo Ardiles, 4. Kevin Kilroy, 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Paul Taylor, 7. Adrian Robinson, 8. Nicky Marsh, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs Used: 12. Scott Neilson (for Marsh, 62),14. Joel Maybury (for Kilroy, 84), 15. Ben Wiper (for Robinson, 45).
The home side belied their bottom of the league status as they gave Hertford a torrid time in the opening minutes. Ex-Blue Danny Bowegett netted with a header from a free kick on 5 minutes, only for the assistant referee to flag for offside, as the Blues' defence looked less than secure. It wasn't all Biggleswade, as Kevin Cooper flashed a header over the bar from a Paul Taylor free kick, and then, on 9 minutes, Hertford also had a goal ruled out for offside - Ryan Redford walked the ball home after a Cooper shot was blocked by The Waders' ex Hertford 'keeper, Lee Robinson.
On 20 minutes, Robinson was again the home sides saviour, as he parried away a vicious cross from the right by Ryan Redford. Hertford were settling down now and the defensive scares were becoming less and less. Kevin Cooper's shot struck the foot of the post but you sensed that he was the man who would break the deadlock. On the half hour Biggleswade had to reorganise after losing right back Michael Gatti with injury.
Neither side could make the vital breakthrough in the remaining minutes of the half and at this stage the game had all the hallmarks of one heading towards extra time..
Half Time: Biggleswade Town 0 Hertford Town 0
Hertford made a bold substitution at half time, replacing Adrian Robinson with reserve team player Ben Wiper in central midfield. Wiper had been starring in the reserve side in recent games and had played 90 minutes the previous evening. The substitution was to prove a sucess though, as Wiper made an impressive debut, patrolling the middle with distinction.
Ryan Redford forced a good save out of Lee Robinson, from distance on 49 minutes, and from the corner, KEVIN COOPER found space at the far post to head home to break the deadlock. Almost immediately, it was 2-0, as Nicky Marsh headed firmly into the middle for KEVIN COOPER to volley his second spectacularly from outside the box. The gallant home side were completely stunned by the sudden turnaround. Hertford replaced Nicky Marsh, Scott Neilson coming on, on 62 minutes, and the youngster was soon showing off his range of trickery down the right. Try as they might, Biggleswade couldn't make an impact on Hertford's defence, with the referee repeatedly stepping in to award free kicks to the visitors. He also found time to book three home players for fouls, as they became more exposed at the back late in the game. On one occasion, it would have been far more beneficial to Hertford to be given the advantage, as Ryan Redford was away one on one with Robinson, when play was called back for a foul on Lee Roberts.
Danny Bowgett was unlucky to see his shot from an acute angle skim the top of the crossbar on 83 minutes, but with Nicky Barnaby making a couple of important saves late on, that was all they could muster, and Hertford ran out rather easy winners in the end. The telling difference between the sides on the night was the goalscoring prowess of that man Cooper.
Final score: Biggleswade Town 0 Hertford Town 2
