CENTENARY SEASON 2007-08

TUESDAY 28 AUGUST 2007 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION
COLNEY HEATH 0 HERTFORD TOWN 5
Pablo Ardiles was restored to left back and Nicky Marsh filled the wide right berth, otherwise the team was the same as on Saturday. It was Colney Heath's bad luck to be next to face the Blues, receiving the backlash of Saturday's "mugging" by Beaconsfield SYCOB.

The game began at a fast and furious pace on a fine evening for football. Hertford, still smarting from the home defeat last time out, set about Colney Heath from the off, and there was little the spirited home side could do to stem the tide. Although it took half an hour for the visitors to open the scoring, the result was never in doubt from then on.
Lee Roberts whipped in a 4th minute cross and only a timely interception from a home defender stopped Nicky Burt from heading home. On 7 minutes it looked for certain that The Blues would open their account, when Ryan Redford finished a trademark run with a shot which rebounded to Kevin Cooper. The No. 10 shot first time but the ball was defected for a corner. Kevin Kilroy was the next to threaten the home goal, when he struck an excellant free kick narrowly over the bar. There was a moment of concern at the other end when Mark Virgo and a home forward collided as Virgo rushed out to smother a through ball. Both recovered after treatment however. Pany played a fine pass through to Ryan Redford on 14 minutes, but last season's top marksman saw his shot cannon off 'keeper Blackman. for another corner. Lee Roberts fired in the corner kick and Blackman punched it straight back to him. Roberts returned the ball and this time Blackman put it behind for yet another corner. The Blues players appealed for a penalty on 16 minutes when a defender appeared to flick the ball with his arm, but the referee was having none of it. Then, in a rare attack by the home side, Glenn Draper made a superb challenge, hooking the ball 50 yards away on to the training pitch, only for the referee to adjudge it a foul, as the Colney Heath player hit the deck. The free kick was wasted however. Hertford won another free kick when Ryan Wade was brought down heavily by Jake Parratt. Wade got up and took the kick himself, but the ball flew straight to 'keeper Jackman.
A couple of minutes later, Wade repeated the feat. Then, on 28 minutes, Colney Heath had their first shot at goal. This merely acted as a wake up call for the Blues, and after a Ryan Wade shot had rebounded off the 'keeper, and Kevin Cooper had poked the ball wide from 8 yards, the opener finally came. Pany played a defence splitting ball through to NICKY BURT, free on the right, and he cooly slotted home past Blackman to make it 1-0 to Hertford.
It was all Hertford, and they won several more corners and free kicks as a desperate home side tried to keep them at bay. Cooper headed just wide from a Lee Roberts free kick, and then, bang on the half hour, PABLO ARDILES scored a delightful goal. He seized on a loose ball at the left hand corner of the box and curled a terrific ball away from the 'keeper and into the top right hand corner of the net, turning to celebrate even before the ball had nestled in the back of the net.
On 43 minutes it was 3-0 when KEVIN COOPER stabbed the ball home from close range.
Colney Heath's Tom Dickie was booked, apparently for dissent just before the half time whistle.
Half Time: Colney Heath 0 Hertford Town 3
Pany was booked on 49 minutes for a foul, then Ryan Wade shot wide after good team build up play, as the Blues now attacked down the slope. Hertford got a free kick on the edge of the box when Colney Heath skipper Scott Lacey fouled Nicky Marsh, as the full back rampaged forward. The chance came to nothing though, but the visitors were soon back on the attack, with Ryan Redford going close twice. Hertford replaced Nicky Burt with Phil Goss on 58 minutes, with Burt getting a good round of applause from the Blues' travelling support. It was 4-0 on the hour, when RYAN REDFORD cut in on the left side of the penalty area and saw his shot ricochet of a defender on it's way into the net.
On 63 minutes, Lee Roberts was desperately unlucky when he powered in from the left wing and let fly with an absolute rocket, which hit the bar on a narrow angle. As Colney Heath became more desperate, Phil Jackman was booked for hacking down Ryan Wade when the little midfielder cleverly beat him to the ball. The home side sent on winger Johnny Offei to try and put pressure on Hertford, but it was the visitors who continued to dominate. Cooper went close with an overhead kick on 71 minutes, and then, with 15 minutes left, Pany came off to be replaced by teenager Ross Collins. Greg Deacon, who had been struggling manfully on his own up front for Colney Heath finally got a chance on 76 minutes, running in from the left and steering his ground shot just wide of the far post. Louis Lancaster came on for the last 5 minutes, replacing Pablo Ardiles, and almost immediately fired a shot across the face of the goal. Hertford's nap hand was completed on 85 minutes, when KEVIN COOPER looped a header into the net from a Redford cross.
This performance would have done a lot to restore belief after Saturday, but in truth, Colney Heath were poor opposition.
Final Score: Colney Heath 0 Hertford Town 5
