SAT 17 FEBRUARY 2007 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
HERTFORD TOWN 0 EDGWARE TOWN 0

Hertford were without top scorer Ryan Redford, beginning his three match ban for the sending off at Langford; there was a return for Mark Virgo in goal. Manager Dave Greenwood took the option of playing with just Kevin Cooper up front, and employed an extra man in midfield to try and negate Edgware's star man Richard Morton. Cooper was making his 200th career appearance for the Blues. The Wares were without their ex-pro Junior Lewis, and striker Stuart Blackburne, who was injured.

This was perhaps the most important game of the season so far for both sides - nothing less than a win would do for Hertford, whilst a draw would satisfy Edgware. For once this season though, The Blues took a more cautious approach to a game, and assigned Ryan Wade to man mark Edgware's prolific midfielder Richard Morton. Edgware were happy to contain Hertford and build up their attacks from the back. There were few scoring opportunities in the opening minutes, Panayiotis Panayiotou set up Lee Roberts for shot on 6 minutes, but it was easily gathered by the giant Darren Bonfield, recently installed in the Edgware goal in place of season long stopper Rob Blackburne. Two minutes later, Ryan Wade floated a free kick into the box, and Kevin Cooper just failed to get a proper contact on his header, and the ball skimmed off his head wide of the post.
On 12 minutes, Jason Fernee fairly thumped the ball out for a corner to end a Lee Roberts run, but then Pablo Ardiles had to act similarly to stop an incisive run by Steve Brady. The corner was cleared to Richard Morton, lurking outside the box and he got in a fierce strike which was blocked on the line by Nicky Marsh. Morton again escaped his marker on 22 minutes, but this time fired over the bar. Hertford then came near on 24 minutes, when Panayiotou and Goss combined well to set up a chance for Lee Roberts, but he shot wide from 12 yards. Mark Buchanan came close for Edgware from a corner, but then Hertford broke away and a Phil Goss shot was headed off the line by Johnny Moore.
Darren Bonfield in the visitors' goal was not troubled by a Kevin Cooper shot, and the Richard Morton had his third effort on goal, this time over the bar from 18 yards. Pablo Ardiles did well to block an Adam Wallace close range effort then Lee Roberts was on hand to deflect a Steve Brady shot for a corner. After 36 minutes. Kevin Cooper made a good run down the right and Bonfield had to turn his shot around the post for a corner. Kevin Kilroy made a timely interception to stop a Steve Brady cross reaching the head of Richard Morton, as play went from end to end, and then it was Hertford's turn, as Phil Goss nearly netted from a clever flick to him by Kevin Cooper.

Half Time: Hertford Town 0 Edgware Town 0

Hertford began the second half with apparently more attacking intent, and had Edgware pegged back for quite a while. Leo Turner had a chance but the ball was booted away into the river by a Ware's defender. Edgware were looking dangerous on the break though, and Adam Wallace was beginning to pose more of a threat. He nearly capitalised on another good Steve Brady run and cross, but Mark Virgo and Glenn Draper combined to keep him out. Hertford heaped more pressure on and more good work by Phil Goss set up Panayiotis Panayiotou, but the midfielder's shot appeared to take a deflection which took it into Bonfield's grateful arms. Adam Wallace made asurging run down the left, but Ryan Wade got in a challenge to concede a corner. From this, Mark Virgo was called upon to make his only real save of the game, when he made a point blank stop from Paul Marks. Richard Morton became the first booking of the afternoon when he appeared to exhaust the referee's patience after several tickings off. Hertford attacked again, and Nicky Marsh crossed to Leo Turner, whose header was held by Bonfield. On 70 minutes, Hertford sent on sub Michael Bakare as a straight swap for Lee Roberts, and at the same time Edgware replaced Steve Brady with Phil Kane. The Wares then sent on Paul Killick for Ben Cain, on 76 minutes. With ten minutes to go, Glenn Draper did well to concede a corner to break up an Edgware attack, and Richard Morton's shot was deflected for another corner.
Hertford made a second substitution when Tony Neilson replaced Panayiotou, and moments later, Paul Marks saved the day for the Wares when he headed a Glenn Draper header off the goal-line. The game ended on a slightly sour note when Kevin Kilroy fouled Morton in midfield, and both needed extensive treatment. There was a bit of a fracas as both players lay on the ground, and when it had all calmed down, Kilroy was booked for the tackle, and Glenn Draper and Ryan Wade got yellow cards for unnecessarily getting involved in the fracas.
