SATURDAY 1 DECEMBER 2007
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISON HANWELL TOWN 1 HERTFORD TOWN 1

Skipper Kevin Kilroy and Matt Watts both returned to the heart of defence, and Lee Roberts was restored to the No. 11 shirt. There was no place in the starting line-up for Louis Lancaster, with Pablo Ardiles reverting to left back.
Hertford Town: 1. Lee Robinson, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Pablo Ardile, 4. Kevin Kilroy (Capt), 5. Matt Watts, 6. Ryan Wade, 7. Matt McArdle, 8. Phil Goss, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Lee Roberts. No Subs Used.

This was Hertford's first visit to Reynolds Field in league action, and after their drubbing on Tuesday, they were intent on making the most of the fine playing surface to get a result against promotion rivals Hanwell. Had it not been for an unjust straight red card shown to Matt McArdle on 62 minutes, three points looked on the cards for the Blues, such was the quality of their performance. As it was, the ten men held out really well against the home side's onslaught and could have secured the winning goal in the dieing minutes.
Both sides had unproductive forays into their opponents' 18 yard boxes before the first real threat came on 8 minutes, via Ryan Redford, who made a scintillating run through the home defence only to see his on-target shot deflected off a defender for a corner. Phil Goss's floated corner kick dropped on to the roof of the net, carried by the unpredictable wind. When Hanwell won their first corner, on 13 minutes, the ball was headed over the bar. Hertford took a lead on 17 minutes through KEVIN COOPER, who stole onto a through ball to plant the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards, having just stayed onside.
A good break by Hanwell on 22 minutes saw Danny Edwards play in Kwasi Frempong, but he completely fluffed his shot and presented Lee Robinson with an easy save. Two minutes later Ryan Redford left the home defenders for dead but hit a rising shot just over the bar. Hanwell responded when Jason Tucker forced a good save on the ground from Lee Robinson. When Hertford were awarded a free kick centrally 30 yards from goal, Ryan Wade tried his luck but his effort cleared the crossbar by a couple of feet. Play went from end to end, and when Hanwell attacked next, Kevin Kilroy made a timely headed interception at the expense of a corner. Then it was The Blues' turn again, when Ryan Redford won a corner when his shot was deflected.
Phil Goss was booked for a reckless challenge on 38 minutes, and neither side was able to fashion a chance in the remaining minutes of the half.

Half Time: Hanwell Town 0 Hertford Town 1

Hertford resumed brightly and Kevin Cooper ought to have increased the lead on 49 minutes. Fed by Ryan Redford in a swift break, his shot crashed against the crossbar and rebounded into play. Redford made an appeal for a penalty when he appeared to be pushed over from behind, but he was disappointed, as the referee waved play on. Kevin Kilroy was the second Hertford player to be booked, following an incident with Hanwell's Charlie Baverstock, who was also shown a yellow card. Hanwell were getting on top in the torrential rain, and Lee Robinson was called upon to punch clear from a free kick by Daley Joseph. The inevitable equaliser came on 55 minutes, when CHARLIE BAVESTOCK swept home the loose ball after Lee Robinson and Jason Tucker had challenged in the air for across by Maradona Mason, and it fell at the leading scorer's feet.
Hanwell's Kwasi Frempong was booked for a foul on Ryan Wade, and only a minute later the referee caused howls of anguish when he appeared to make no allowance whatsoever for the greasy conditions and showed a straight red card to Hertford's Matt McArdle following a slide into Hanwell's Danny Edwards. Pablo Ardiles became another to enter the busy ref's notebook when he argued at length about the injustice of the red card. Hertford regrouped, with Phil Goss taking up McArdle's centre midfield role, and Ryan Redford dropping back to the wide right midfield slot vacated by Goss. This formation worked so well that, in the remaining half hour or so, it was the Blues who created the most telling chances. With the help of some smart goalkeeping by Lee Robinson, Hertford kept the home side at bay, and could and perhaps should have snatched the winner on 87 miutes when Ryan Wade and Kevin Cooper led a charge which placed the ball at Redford's feet inside the 6 yard box. The normally lethal striker somehow hit goalkeeper Jakub Machlowski who hung on for an excellant save, when it looked for all the world that Redford would score. Redford even had another chance to give his side the points, in the 90th minute, when he made a fine run but shot wide.
