SATURDAY 19 APRIL 2008 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION
HERTFORD TOWN 2 HANWELL TOWN 1
This was a good, competitive game which started brightly on a dull day for the home side when they took a 2nd minute lead. Hanwell hit back on 11 minutes and it looked like they might be the ones to get the winner, but a marvellous run through the middle and a fine finish from Lee Roberts in the dieing minutes saw The Blues take all three points.

The attendance was boosted by a group of former players, specially invited to the game as part of the Club's Centenery celebrations. They saw a competitive game, of a standard unlike a meaningless end of season affair. Hertford took a very early lead when KEVIN COOPER scored goal number 213 in his quest to overtake Dave Whitehead's all time record of 216. The goal came after Attila Korsoveczki was fouled out on the left. Lee Roberts floated in a dangerous free kick which evaded both Maradona Mason and Hertford's Dave Hunt and fell to Cooper, who gleefully turned the ball home in a crowded goalmouth.
Hanwell repelled several more Hertford attacks before equalising when CHARLIE BAVERSTOCK ran on and netted with a blistering shot from just inside the penalty area. They went on to win a corner, from which John McKnight volleyed not too far wide of the post. At the other end Cooper did well to hold up the ball, turn and shoot, but his effort was deflected for a corner. Sean Crossley had to concede another corner before Hertford mounted another attack in which Attila Korsoveczki broke free but was just a yard too slow, as keeper TAylor raced out and beat him to the ball. Glenn Draper had been strugging from early in the game, and was replaced by Matt Watts on the half hour. Kevin Cooper and Pablo Ardiles linked up well to set up Korsoveczki, but although the Hungarian struck the ball sweetly, it flew just the wrong side of the left hand upright.
On 34 minutes, Hanwell should hav etaken the lead when Charlie Baverstock missed completely whe two yards in front of goal, from a Darren O'Callaghan cross. Two minutes later, Cooper and Ardiles played a sweet 1/2 but Ardiles put his shot over the bar as he stretched for the ball. Korsoveczki had a shot deflected for a corner and Cooper headed inches over the bar before Victor Osobu hit the crossbar but was given offside.
Half Time: Hertford Town 1 Hanwell Town 1
Hanwell skipper Mason did not appear for the second half, having received a knock in the first, and was replaced by Blake Goodman. Neither side could get on top of the other as the two midfields battled it out, and the defences coped with all attacks. Phil Goss became the first booking of the game, when his frustration at being wrongly accused of a foul boiled over and the referee showed him a yellow card. Ryan Wade, out for two games through suspension, came on to replace Panayiotis Panayiotou on 60 minutes, an d the Stable End Choir were in fine voice backing their favourites. But it was the visitors who were winning much of the possession. Dave Hunt was booked for a foul as he tried to stemn the flow. On 87 minutes, Mark Gallagher brought a fine save from Mark Virgo as Hanwell threw a lot of men forward looking for the winner. They were caught out however, when LEE ROBERTS, who had switched to the middle, ran on to a through ball and lashed a fine winner past keeper Taylor. There were late bookings for Pablo Ardiles and Kevin Cooper but the Blues held on comfortably in the final minutes to rousing acclaim from the vociferous fans
Final score: Hetford Town 2 Hanwell Town 1
