The Blues began brightly enough, with Nicky Marsh, Rory Brien and then Ryan Redford all going close with shots ,with little threat from the home side. Then on 17 minutes disaster struck. Diamontino So Jalo floated in a high looping cross from the right wing, and, with Elton Almeida in close attendance, Nick Barnaby was deceived by the dropping ball, and it fell behind him into the net.
Shocked by this reverse, Hertford piled on the pressure, and won a free kick out on the right. When this was swung into the home penalty area, KEVIN KILROY was on hand to sweep the ball home to equalise. The Blues could count themselves lucky though, as Kilroy had floored centre half Marcus Lansiquot out of the referee's sight before moving to meet the free kick. As on subsequent occasions when a home payer was injured, there were histrionics and much thrashing about before the injured player was able to get up and continue.
Tigers' Diamontino So Djalo was booked on 22 minutes for a foul on Louis Lancaster then Hertford won two corners in quick succession which brought no reward. Tigers' Almeida and Vicente were very pacy and finding lots of space, but the end product, thankfully for Hertford, amounted to nothing. Vicente headed at Nick Barnaby from point blank range and although the teenager made a good stop, the assistant's flag was raised for offside. On the half hour, Adriano Gomes Marques hit a screamer which was still rising as it went over the bar, from all of 30 yards. Glenn Draper should have put the Blues ahead on 31 minutes when he had a free header at the far post from a corner, but he put the ball wide of the post. Tigers had a little spell of dominance during which they forced a corner when Nick Barnaby had to play safe, but what chances there were generally fell to the visitors. Ryan Redford stroked the ball just past the post from a narrow angle and then a fine cross from Lee Roberts led to a Ryan Wade header being deflected for a corner.
Half Time: Kingsbury London Tigers 1 Hertford Town 1
The game became much more aggressive in the second period. Ryan Wade was lectured at length following a foul on Almeida, then Vicente used his pace to retrieve a lost cause and fire his shot into the side netting, giving Hertford a scare. Ryan Redford was caught offside and felt the need to complain long enough for the referee to book him for dissent. Then, a minute later, Tigers thought they should have had a penalty for a push in the box. Denilson Vicente then went down and rolled and writhed on the ground even while being attended by the physio. The referee took the unusual step of giving the ball back to Hertford and allowing them to mount an attack.
On the hour, Hertford brought off Rory Brien, who had struggled manfully to fill the No. 10 shirt, and brought on youngster Ross Collins. Tigers' Almeida showed that he too was capable of retrieving a ball destined to run out of play, and got in a cross which was nearly converted by Vicente. Johir Miah got clean through on goal, but unfortunately for him, he trod on the ball and the opportunity was lost. When Glenn Draper was forced to concede a free kick 35 yards out, Adriano Gomes Marques hit a stunning drive which clipped the angle of post and bar before going behind. Tigers' Tarik Ellekhlifi was booked for chopping down Louis Lancaster, who demonstrated to the home side how to lie still when injured.
Denilson Vicente was substituted by Renars Zarchenko, more of an orthodox striker, and he nearly got through to score immediately. Hertford won a corner on 83 minutes then, when Paul Taylor's shot from distance was blocked the ball fell to Ryan Redford, who netted, only to be given offside.
Hertford sent on Nicky Burt for Lee Roberts, and a minute later, on 89 minutes, a swift attack by The Blues saw the ball switched to ROSS COLLINS on he right of the box, and he smashed a fine shot home to the delight of the Hertford contingent, to make it 2-1 to the visitors. Then there was another instance of a Tigers' player writhing around on the ground in apparent agony when Ryan Wade clashed with Terence Cariba in the home box. as the final minutes were played out, Kingsbury tried to take advantage of all the time added on because of their hystrionics, but Hertford's defence held firm.
The Blues will win no prizes for style and grace for this performance, but were well satisfied to win "ugly" against speedy, talented opponents who felt at the end that they had deserved something from the game.
Final Score: Kingsbury London Tigers 1 Hertford Town 2
