TUESDAY 2 OCTOBER 2007 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE CHALLENGE TROPHY
HERTFORD TOWN 0 KINGSBURY LONDON TIGERS
With Saturday's FA Vase trip to Concord Rangers in mind, Manager Dave Greenwood rested several key players for this one, and that this was a risky strategy was born out by the result.
Nicky Marsh, Kevin Kilroy, Ryan Wade and Phil Goss warmed the bench, and strikers Ryan Redford and Kevin Cooper took no part at all. Lee Roberts and Rory Brien were the central strikers, with Alex Scriven and Nicky Burt out wide.
Hertford Town: 1. Nick Barnaby, 2. Pablo Ardiles, 3. Louis Lancaster, 4. Robbie Carroll, 5. Glenn Draper (capt), 6. Paul Taylor, 7. Ross Collins, 8. Nicky Burt, 9. Alex Scriven, 10.Rory Brien, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs Used: 14. Phil Goss (for Burt, 78), 15. Kevin Kilroy (for Carroll, 45), 16. Ryan Wade (for Scriven, 69).
The start of the game was delayed for a little over half an hour as the visitors were held up in traffic on the way to Hertford. The long delay on their journey did not seem to affect Tigers, and they could have taken a lead in the first minute, a common feature of the last few games at home for the Blues. Paul Taylor miscontrolled the ball in front of goal and Danilson Vicente shoud have done better with a gift of a chance, which he placed over the bar. Hertford responded immediately, and Lee Roberts fired in a deep cross which found Nicky Burt beyond the far post. Burt's shot was deflected for an early corner. As Hertford continued to set the pace, Roberts played in Rory Brien, but he slipped as he shot and the ball just cleared the bar. On five minutes Alex Scriven stole in at the far post but somehow contrived to miss, Then Glenn Draper skied the ball high over the bar from a Lee Roberts corner when a stooping header might have been better.
After this bright start by The Blues, it was a shock on 15 minutes when the visitors took the lead. Nick Barnaby had saved one thumping shot but the ball broke to HENRY EMINEKE, who struck a beautiful drive home from 20 yards. Lee Roberts had the chance to level things three minutes later, but missed an absolute gift from 12 yards after good work by Rory Brien. This miss probably heralded the real turning point of the game. All the confidence seemed to flow out of the home side, and Tigers began to believe that they could win. Chances became few and far between, although Hertford believed that they should have had a penalty on 32 minutes, for a push on Ross Collins.
Collin also appeared to have his shirt tugged as he ran on to a superb through ball from Paul Tayor, with the youngster's shot going just wide of the upright. Hertford won a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the 18 yard box, but when Paul Taylor chipped the ball into the box, Robbie Carroll's header was straight at 'keeper Kambila.
Half Time: Hertford Town 0 Kingsbury London Tigers 1
Hertford made a half time substitution, with Kevin Kilroy replacing Robbie Carroll, and taking the captain's armband back from Glenn Draper.
In the first real action of the second half, on 51 minutes, Tigers took what looked like an unassailable lead, when MARCO TAGBASUMI glanced a perfectly placed header past Nick Barnaby. Geed up by this second goal, Tigers attacked with more purpose, and both Tagbasumi and Danilson Vicente tested Barnaby. Glenn Draper was able to clear off the line when Tigers got a corner, and the ball was taken on by Nicky Burt until he too won a corner. Kevin Kilroy got his head to the corner kick, but was only able to flick his header over the bar. The referee was beginning to lose patience with some of the tactics employed by Tigers, and Elton Almieda was the first to receive a booking. When Hertford won a 63rd minute corner, Ross Collins struck well from distance, but Kambila saved well on the ground. Nick Barnaby was required to tip the ball over the bar when Tigers got a free kick on the edge of the box, then, on 69 minutes, Hertford sent on Ryan Wade to play up front, at the expense of Alex Scriven. Tigers' Marcus Lansiquot was the next to be bookeda nd almost immediately Glenn Draper saw yellow for a rugby tackle on Danilson Vicente.
Phil Goss finally got into the action on 68 minutes, replacing Nicky Burt, and he nearly set up an opportunity with his first run down the wing. Hertford were trying anything to get a goal back, but Tigers were sitting back soaking it all up. Glenn Draper was thrown forward in the last 15 minutes, leaving the home side a little more vulnerable at the back. Two more visitors were booked, Johir Miah and Henry Emineke, but Hertford could conjure nothing up and Tigers ran out comfortable winners in the end, after a very disappointing second half, in front of Hertingfordbury Park's lowest crowd in a long time.
Final Score: Hertford Town 0 Kingsbury London Tigers 2
