SATURDAY 9 DECEMBER 2006 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
HERTFORD TOWN 3 KINGSBURY LONDON TIGERS 1
A cold day, sticky pitch and cautious opponents made for a forgettable first half, but things certainly hotted up in the second as Hertford got back on the winning trail and took advantage of the fact that the other top teams were in FA Vase action to close the gap. Hertford had to play in their red away kit as Kingsbury turned up in yellow and blue.
Hertford brought back Lee Roberts after the midweek experiment of using Michael Bakare in the wide left position, otherwise the team was unchanged from the midweek win over Potters Bar Town.
Team: 1. Mark Virgo, 2. Ashley McAloon, 3. Pablo Ardiles, 4. Kevin Kilroy, 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Panayiotis Panayiotou, 7. Paul Taylor, 8. Scott Neilson, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs used: 12. Nicky Marsh (for McAloon, 73), 16. Mark Seller (for Taylor, 88).
The opening period of the game was lacking in excitement for the disappointingly low crowd of 90. Hertford tried their best to break down the visitors' defence but the best they could do was a Ryan Redford shot on the turn on 13 minutes which flew high over the bar. On 22 minutes Kevin Cooper was robbed by a defender for a corner when it looked like he would score. Kingsbury won a corner on 23 minutes in a rare moment of pressure on the home goal but it was Hertford who threatened next when Pablo Ardiles got forward but shot wide with Ryan Redford waiting unmarked for a pass.
A few minutes later, Hertford won a free kick out on the right and Kevin Kilroy floated a long ball on to the head of Ryan Redford. Although the scorer of 30 goals so far this season, only one has been a header, and this wasn't about to be number two, as the ball looped off Ryan's head and over the bar. On 37 minutes it looked as if visiting 'keeper Siki Kambila had pulled Ryan Redford down from behind, but the referee saw it differently and awarded a goal kick.
The only other effort on goal in the half saw Paul Taylor try one of his long range left foot specials, but his effort just cleared the bar. On half time, Ryan Redford completely mistimed a tackle and scythed down Eugene Burndam. Tigers' player manager Eddie Cardoso ran halfway across the pitch to push Redford over and was very lucky to escape with a yellow card. Redford was also booked, for the original foul.
Half Time: Hertford Town 0 Kingsbury London Tigers 0
Play was held up for several minutes when Kingsbury's Kye Davies and Hertford's Kevin Kilroy both needed treatment after a clash of heads. On the hour, a Kevin Cooper shot rebounded off 'keeper Kambila to Ashley McAloon, but the right back skied the ball high over the bar.
When a Ryan Redford shot was blocked by Kambila, the ball broke to Kye Davies who looked away and clear. Inexplicably though, he looked across and played a pinpoint pass to the backtracking Lee Roberts, who was able to clear. Paul Taylor broke away down the left and floated a cross invitingly for Scott Neilson, but he was only able to head softly to the keeper. The breakthrough came on 63 minutes, when fine work by Kevin Cooper set up the opener for RYAN REDFORD. Cooper pushed the ball forward into the box, realised that no-one was going for it and ran on to his own pass. He knocked the ball across the box to his strike partner, who gleefully thumped it into the back of the net from close range.
This should have opened the floodgates, but it actually shocked the visitors into playing their best football of the game so far. The much baited Kye Davies (on account of his Jackson Five Affro hairdo) got free down the right and crossed precisely to the far post, where Paulius Olisauskas struck a fine equaliser.
Kingsbury were now looking dangerous for the first time in the game, and Mark Virgo had to make a fine diving save to stop Olisauskas scoring again. Tigers' Anatoliy Snigur reacted badly to a tackle by apparently headbutting a Hertford defender, but the referee for the second time in the game was rather lenient with only a yellow card shown. Hertford brought on Nicky Marsh for Ashley McAloon on 73 minutes, but Kingsbury were still doing much of the attacking. Then., on 79 minutes came the best goal of the game, when Kevin Kilroy showed great determination to win the ball on the halfway line by the dugouts, and play a superb ball forward to Ryan Redford. A quick pass to Kevin Cooper saw the skipper play in SCOTT NEILSON, who dispatched the ball from close rage for 2-1. This time the visitors couldn't respond, and RYAN REDFORD netted his second and Hertford's third when he pounced on a rebound from a Scott Neilson shot.
Pablo Ardiles, watched by his legendary father, Ossie, got forward late on but there was no power in his final shot. Mark Seller came on for Paul Taylor for the final few minutes, as Hertford saw out the rest of the game comfortably.
