PHIL GOSS was a header short of the perfect hat-trick as he got the Blues off to an excellent start with two almost identical goals within a minute of each other. The first came in the 7th minute when he caught Green’s Paul Leslie ball-watching as he ran onto a pass from Kevin Cooper from the halfway line. He went through the defence to fire a right foot strike past ‘keeper Derek Lewis from just outside the 6 yard box. Less than a minute later Cooper was again the provider, but this time Goss scored with his left foot for Hertford’s 2nd goal.
In fact we had almost scored in the 6th minute, when a Goss corner went to Ryan Wade who passed the ball through to Ryan Redford about 2 yards out. Redford flicked the ball goal-wards, and only an excellent reflex save on the line by Lewis stopped it going in the net.
Green might have pulled a goal back in the 13th minute when Josh Price hit a free kick into the six yard box, but Adam Collins put the ball over the bar. In truth, Green had little meaningful possession in the opposition half, and didn’t get a shot on target until the 43rd minute when Collins crossed for Mark Welling, whose shot was saved by Mark Virgo at the foot of the post. Glenn Draper was booked for holding on 39 minutes.

Half Time: Hertford Town 2 Leverstock Green 0

The second half was a different story, though, as Green came out attacking, winning two corners and a free kick in a dangerous position in the opening five minutes. Their task was made even harder, though, as another rapid-fire Hertford attack caught their defence out of shape, and Nicky Marsh crossed for RYAN REDFORD to shoot home the third goal in the 54th minute.
With the addition of James Armstrong up front, Green looked a much better attacking proposition, and actually played some good football as they poured forward and had more of the possession during the half. However, Hertford proved as adept at the back as they were up front, and successfully repelled all that Green could throw at them. Their best opening came four minutes from time when Welling threaded a pass through to Armstrong, but his shot went just over the bar.
For the last fifteen minutes Green played with ten men, after Lee Waryszniuk was taken out of the game by a bad tackle minutes after Mick Vipond had used his third substitute. Five minutes from time a Kevin Cooper shot was well saved by Lewis. Green had much more of the match in the 2nd half, but, instead of getting their deserved consolation goal, they ended up conceding a fourth goal deep into stoppage time when a poor defensive header following a cross by Tony Neilson dropped for KEVIN COOPER to shoot home.
