Report by Matt Harris
Hertford’s FA Cup dreams are over for another season after a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Ryman league team Maldon & Tiptree. The home side probably deserved to progress but despite the margin of defeat, Hertford put up a battling display, particularly in the second half and, with a little luck and the odd decision going our way, we could have at least taken the tie to a replay.
An even opening gave way to a forgettable first half which saw us go into the break 3-0 down. This could have been even worse but for but for Lee Robinson’s superb penalty save at 1-0.
Half Time: Maldon & Tiptree 3 Hertford Town 0
Given the score-line at half time, Hertford could have been forgiven for settling for some damage limitation but a bright opening saw Dominic Musafiri’s low header cleared off the line within two minutes of the restart. Not to be denied, Dom scored soon after with a low drive to get us back into the game.
Hertford pressed and inevitably left gaps at the back but Robinson kept us in it some fine saves before Maldon finally added their fourth.
Arin Fehmi scored what looked to be just a consolation five minutes from time but soon after, a defensive mix-up in the Maldon penalty area saw the ball loop towards goal and appear to cross the line before being hooked away.
The referee’s assistant however didn’t see it that way and we were denied a tense finish to the game which was probably the least that we deserved following the second half fight-back.
