WEDNESDAY 21 JAN - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION CUP
OXHEY JETS 4 HERTFORD TOWN 3
(AFTER EXTRA TIME)

Only five of Saturday's starting line up at Ruislip took the field for this one, with Mark Virgo giving way to Nick Barnaby in goal, Nick Turner coming in for the suspended Kevin Kilroy, Ryan Wade replacing Panayiotis Panayiotou, Tony Neilson replacing Michael Bakare, and young reserve team player Michael Cooper in for Phil Goss, and Ryan Redford for Kevin Cooper.
Team: 1. Nick Barnaby, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Pablo Ardiles, 4. Nick Turner, 5. Glenn Draper, 6 Paul Taylor, 7. Ryan Wade, 8. Michael Cooper. 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Tony Neilson, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs 12. Kevin Viggiano (for Neilson, 93), 14. Dave Greenwood (for Turner, 45), 16. Adrian Robinson (for Cooper, 108).

Hertford gave their hosts the best possible boost when GLENN DRAPER turned the ball into his own net past a startled Nick barnaby, in the first attack of the game. Jets wide man Wayne Gladdy whipped a low cross into the box from the left and Draper couldn't avoid steering the ball home.
Hertford settled down and played some enterprising football, although the much changed line-up didn't look particularly secure. Ryan Wade struck a wicked half volley from 20 yards and home 'keeper Kevin Paul somehow beat it out, for it to stick on the mud in the goalmouth before being hacked away for a corner. On 16 minutes Ryan Redford appeared to be hauled down by the keeper but nothing was given despite loud appeals. Oxhey were doing plenty of attacking, and on 28 minutes went two up through Tim O'Mara who stroked home from 6 yards with Hertford's defence justifiably appealling for offside. It looked all over a minute later when Jamie Arthur was pulled down by Nick Barnaby right on the edge of the box, with a penalty but no other punishment resulting. Marc Ayres scored with a good strike which Barnaby got a hand to.
Jets were rampant now, and Nick Barnaby had to pull off a brilliant one handed save to keep the score down to three. Then he saved another certain goal with his feet a minute later. Hertford struck back and the excellant Tony Neilson laid a goal on a plate for Ryan Redford, but the striker slipped over on the difficult surface.
Oxhey's Hussain Ali went close with an 18 yard effort before Paul Taylor let fly with a rasping shot which the keeper could only parry up in the air. Unfortunately, the sticky goalmouth beat Ryan Redford again as he just failed to get to the loose ball.
Wayne Gladdy brought the eventful half to a close with a firm drive across goal which just faded past the post.

Half Time : Oxhey Jets 3 Hertford Town 0

The small number of Hertford fans present could not have dreamed of what was about to happen in the second period! Dave Greenwood withdrew Nick Turner and came on himself. A triangular move saw Lee Roberts moving to his usual left wing berth, with Tony Neilson moving inside and Ryan Wade taking over Robert's striking role. Jets responded to this by withdrawing centre forward Jamie Arthur and sending on the equally speedy Dave Maynard.
The fightback began on 55 minutes, when Tony Neilson did really well through the middle before passing to RYAN REDFORD, who cally lobbed the ball into the net for 3-1.
Ryan Wade looked to have added a second but his shot was well held by Kevin Paul. Lee Roberts tried a lob from the corner of the box, only to see his effort ust clear the bar, then it was game on as Pablo Ardiles popped up in the middle to play RYAN REDFORD in with a fine pass on 70 minutes. The striker played a 1-2 off the home keeper before calmly placing the ball home. This setback really affected Jets, and it was no surprise on 73 minutes when RYAN REDFORD duly completed his 7th hat-trick of a remarkable season, when he took the ball on himself before cutting in and unleashing an unstoppable shot to make it 3-3.
Oxhey, never afraid to tackle, were putting in some fierce challenges now, and the game flared up after a strong challenge on Michael Cooper led to an angry exchange which resulted in Hertford's Draper and Oxhey's O'Mara being booked, neither of them the original culprit. Draper stayed up for the free kick, and headed back across goal to Tony Neilson, whose shot was blocked by keeper Paul. Oxhey's Greg McClaren was booked for a foul on Dave Greenwood, before the Hertford manager headed just over the bar from the free kick.
It looked odds on extra time now, and that's the way it turned out.

Score after 90 minutes: Oxhey Jets 3 Hertford Town 3

Nick Barnaby made a good block from Oxhey's Garry Beadle to keep the scores level, then Hertford took off a tired Tony Neilson and sent on reserve team player Kevin Viggiano for his first team debut. Jets won a free kick in a dangerous central position but squandered the chance, then Glenn Draper played a fine ball forward to Ryan Wade. The diminutive striker took his chance early, and his lob cum shot just went the wrong side of the post.A few minutes later Palo Ardiles stole the ball and gave Wade another chance. This time his shot was well wide. Several of the Hertford players had not completed 90 minutes for a long time, never mind extra time on a heavy pitch, and it was not surprising that they could not find that bit extra to take the tie. Michael Cooper, making his first start in the first team, took a huge hit and needed treatment before carrying on as best he could, eventually having to give way to assistant manager Adrian Robinson. Just when penalties looked certain, the brave fightback ultimately failed when Wayne Gladdy got the goal his overall play had deserved, when he stole in and slotted the ball home from 15 yards.
