HERTS SENIOR CUP SECOND ROUND
POTTERS BAR TOWN 2 HERTFORD TOWN 1
Kevin Kilroy and Matt Watts were unfit so Glenn Draper and Shaun Crossley came in at centre back, and Pablo Ardiles was given the night off, so Hertford lined up as:
1. Lee Robinson, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Louis Lancaster, 4. Shaun Crossley, 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Ryan Wade, 7. Dave Hunt, 8. Nicky Marsh, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs Used: 12. Matt McArdle (for Hunt, ), 14. Phil G0oss (for Burt, 45)
Ryman Division One Potters Bar took the game to their visitors from the off, and could have taken a first minute lead, when Lee Robinson had to make a smart save at close range. Potter Bar were looking quicker than Hertford, and caught them out on only four minutes, when SAM ADEJOKUN had a simple tap in from a couple of yards with the Hertford defence still trying to sort themselves out.
Junior Dadson fired into the side netting on six minutes, as The Scholars looked like sewing the game up right at the start. Lee Robinson needed to make another fine save to keep the goals against to just the one, and Hertford had hardly figured as an attacking force. Some niggle was beginning to creep into the game, and Potters Bar's Andrew Thomas was booked. Then, on 23 minutes Lee Robinson rushed out to stop Carl Wilson-Dennis from having a clear run on goal, and clattered into the forward, just after he played the ball. Much to the consternation of the visitors' and their supporters, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, and booked Robinson. ANDREW THOMAS stepped up to fire Potters Bar 2-0 in front.
Hertford were finally coming to terms with the pace of their hosts, and a good move on 27 minutes involving Lee Roberts and Kevin Cooper saw the ball fall to Nicky Burt. Unfortunately Burt was to set the pattern for Hertford's shooting throughout the match, by hitting the ball weakly at home 'keeper Ashlee Jones. Potters Bar's George Sifonios was next to be booked, for a foul on Dave Hunt, and from the resulting free kick, Kevin Cooper saw his shot saved. At the other end skipper Victor Renner fired a free kick just over the bar from 35 yards.
Ryan Wade received a booking on 36 minutes for a foul on the right touchline. The referee played advantage to Potters Bar for some considerable time before returning to Wade to book him. When Hertford won a free kick, Ashlee Jones did well to pluck the ball off Glenn Draper's head as the big defender was set to head home. As the half came to a close, Ryan Redford had a couple of opportunities to get his side back into the match. First he shot weakly at the keeper following a fine run at the defence, then, when he did better with his shooting, the keeper was able to tip his shot around the post for a corner. Nicky Burt took an inswinging corner which fell just between Hertford's Draper and Crossley, and when the ball fell to Le Roberts, he put his shot over the bar.
Half Time: Potters Bar Town 2 Hertford Town 0
Both sides made a half time substitution, Hertford replacing Nicky Burt with Phil Goss. The Blues should have pulled one back almost immediately when Ryan Redford had a glorious chance from close range, but somehow keeper Jones blocked Redford's shot, for a corner. When Potters Bar next attacked, Junior Dadson's pacy cross was a fraction too high for Carl Wilson-Dennis, who would surely have scored had he got his head to the ball, right in front of the goal. Billy Crowther fouled Redford 35 yards out, but when Ryan Wade squared the ball, Dave Hunt's shot smashed into the defensive wall.
Halfway through the half, with The Blues competing on much more equal terms, Ryan Redford again disappointed when he shot weakly at Jones. Hertford nearly paid a high price when play swept to the other end and Shaun Crossley fouled his man right on the 18 yard line. The referee actually placed the ball on the line for the free kick, which Darryl Wilson took, laying on a chance for Junior Dadson. Moments later, as The Scholars turned up the heat a little, substitute Dwayne Jackman had a wonderful opportunity to score. He found himself free with only a despairing Lee Robinson to beat. He rounded Robinson, who thought better of bringing him down, but placed placed his shot into the side netting. Both sides were getting chances in turn now, and after Goss and Cooper had shots blocked, Darryl Wilson beat Glenn Draper but saw his shot blocked well by Lee Robinson. Matt McArdle came on for Dave Hunt, with Henderson Brown coming on for Potters Bar in place of Darryl Wilson. BRown was soon in action, narrowly failing to connect with another good, pacy cross from the left. Hertford won a 78th minute corner which saw keeper Jones beat the ball away for another corner on the other side. This time Jones punched the ball straight out to Matt McArdle, but the substitute only had time to stab at the ball, sending it high over the bar.
Then, on 82 minutes, keeper Jones threw Hertford an apparent lifeline. He had possession of the ball, just inside the penalty area, with Phil Goss standing in front of him. Inexplicably, he used the ball to hit Goss in the face. The referee immediately brandished a red card and awarded Hertford a penalty. Potters Bar took an eternity to replace the goalkeeper, and to stop complaining about the award. Billy Crowther was booked for complaining too much, and eventually KEVIN COOPER was allowed to step up and take the spot kick. He duly dispatched this past the stand in keeper to set up a tense last eight minutes. Potters Bar managed to protect their keeper well enough, and did all that they could to slow the game down and use up the remaining time without conceding an equaliser. Dwayne Jackman became the fifth home player to incur the wrath of the referee when he was booked for timewasting, but the visitors were disappointed when the referee brought the game to an abrupt end with only two minutes of added time played.
Final Score: Potters Bar Town 2 Hertford Town 1
