SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER 2007 - SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION
HERTFORD TOWN 2 ST MARGARETSBURY 0

There was a return to the Club for new signing Lee Robinson, an enforced "rest" for the suspended Ryan Wade and only a place on the bench for the late arriving Lee Roberts. Glenn Draper was back at the expense of Robbie Carroll, in the following Blues' line-up: 1. Lee Robinson, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Louis Lancaster, 4. Kevin Kilroy (capt), 5. Glenn Draper, 6. Matt McArdle, 7. Phil Goss, 8. Ross Collins, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Pablo Ardiles. Sub Used: 12. Lee Roberts (for Collins, 75), 16. Jamie Abbott (for Ardiles, 89).
The visitors, managed by former Hertford player Lee Judges included ex Blues John Barker and Tony Neilson in their starting line-up.
St Margaretsbury: 1. Kris Smithers, 2. Kaine Lovett, 3. Ricky Light, 4. John Barer (capt), 5. Steve Barker, 6. Kevin Eldridge, 7. Kieron Davidson, 8. Andy Birnie, 9. Matt Maskell, 10. Tony Nielson, 11. Ben Darwin. Subs Used: 12. Alfie Koroma (for Donaldson, 56), 14. Ben Herod (for Maskell, 56), 17. Tony Smith (for Birnie, 71).

Hertford might have gone in front in the opening minute, when Kevin Cooper shot wide from a cross by Louis Lancaster. Much of the early action involved Pablo Ardiles, standing in for Lee Roberts wide left. On four minutes he cut in along the goal-line and played the ball to Ryan Redford, who was pulled up for a foul. Then Bury's teenager Kieron Davidson fouled Ardiles to concede a free kick 30 yards out on the left, which came to nothing. Lee Robinson's first touch was to take a goal kick after Bury returned the ball following an injury. On 10 minutes Ross Collins found Kevin Cooper, but the No. 10's flick was held easily by Bury 'keeper Smithers.
Then Pablo Ardiles was booked for a foul on Davidson, which seemed a little harsh, and perhaps cumulative for all the niggles between the two. When Kaine Lovett floated in the free kick, it was an easy catch for home 'keeper Robinson. On 18 minutes, St Margaretsbury's Davidson fouled Ardiles but surprisingly was not booked for what looked like retribution for the earlier foul. The free kick was unproductive, as was one moments later when John Barker fouled Kevin Cooper. The opening goal in a game of few real chances came on the half hour. Pablo Ardiles marauded into the Bury penalty area, survived one tap at his ankles and then went down dramatically when required to hurdle another leg. Despite prolonged protests from the visitors and their bench, the referee was adamant that it was a penalty, and, after waiting while Steve Barker received a lecture, KEVIN COOPER sent Kris Smithers the wrong way and coolly planted the ball in the corner of the net.
The uncompromising John Barker was booked when he scythed down Kevin Cooper from behind on 35 minutes, before Ryan Redford won the first corner of the game on 38 minutes by forcing a save from Smithers. The visitors responded by winning their first corner of the game on 44 minutes, and from this Matt Maskell came close when he rifled his shot just past the right hand upright. As the game went into the sixth minute of added first half time, Steve Barker headed wide from another corner.

Half Time: Hertford Town 1 St Margaretsbury 0

When Hertford launched an attack following a 48th minute free kick, Pablo Ardiles looked to be barged off the ball in the penalty area, but nothing was given. Keiron Davidson was booked for a foul on 51 minutes for yet another free kick around the halfway line. Hertford got closer with their free kicks when, on 53 minutes, they won kicks on either side of the penalty box, the second when Ardiles was again chopped down savagely. From this, Matt McArdle's kick was punched away by Smithers. Just before the hour, Bury manager Lee Judges changed his formation when Alfie Koroma and Ben Herod came on for Davidson and Maskell. Tony Neilson, who had had no luck at all as a striker moved out to his more normal wide right position in place of Davidson. The game continued to be littered with free kicks, mostly conceded in the area around the half way line. From one to the visitors , Tony Neilson, much more in the game now, was unable to put any power into a shot which Lee Robinson gathered up easily. Andy Birnie became the third Bury player to be booked, for a foul on Phil Goss, then Nicky Marsh had a couple of speculative lobs as The Blues looked to find the second goal, then, immediately after Bury had made their final substitution, Tony Smith for Andy Birnie, Hertford produced the best moment of the match. Ross Collins provided a superb cross which Ryan Redford volleyed athletically against the left hand upright, with Smithers completely beaten, the ball crashing off the post with some force.
Glenn Draper was booked for a foul on Bury sub Tony Smith, but the visitors were unable to trouble Lee Robinson with the resultant free kick. The home crowd were calling for Lee Roberts to be unleashed and Dave Greenwood duly obliged on 75 minutes, with Ross Collins making way. St Margaretsbury got through the home defence at last on 77 minutes with Alfie Koroma finding Ben Herod, but the whistle had gone for offside before Herod netted. Kaine Lovett protested too long about this and became the next Bury player to be booked, quickly followed by Hertford's McArdle for a Kung Fu style high challenge.
The three points were assured on 82 minutes when RYAN REDFORD scored at the second attempt, his first being blocked by Smithers. When the ball came out to Redford again, he rifled home from 12 yards to end his recent barren spell. Hertford were on top now, and might have added a third but Phil Goss was unable to get on to a Redford cross. St Margaretsbury won a final corner when Nicky Marsh did well to block a Ben Herod shot, but this provided an easy catch for the underworked Lee Robinson. Man of the Match Pablo Ardiles was given an ovation when he made way on 89 minutes for Jamie Abbott in order to permit the fans to recognise his fine game. In the dieing seconds Lee Roberts whipped in a ball from the left which evaded all the Bury defenders but having too much on it to permit either Ryan Redford or Jamie Abbott to deflect it into the net.
