Football is, as so many people have said, a funny old game. Unable to buy a home win, and leaking goals by the bucketload at home, a 2-0 win against Welwyn Garden City was not in many people's minds before this game. But that's how it turned out, and the squad players who came in took full advantage to impress their new boss. WGC nearly scored as early as the 4th minute. Pat O'Brien hit a backpass against a WGC forward and ball nearly rebounded into an empty net.It was the home side who took the lead on 15 mins when KEVIN ASHWOOD fired a trademark effort from just outside the penalty area in to bottom right corner, to the delight of the surprisingly large crowd.

On 22 min, Ashwood played a good ball through to Simon Eden, playing in his first game after a long injury. The diminutive striker couldn't find a clear route to goal though, and put in a weak shot. Kevin Ashwood got in another powerful shot on 27 minutes which was put over for a corner.
Pat O'Brien made a good save from WGC's top scorer Harry Hunt on 33 minutes and on 40 minutes the prominent Kevin Ashwood saw another cross put behind for a corner.

Half Time: Hertford Town 1 Welwyn Garden City 0

Pablo Ardiles came on for Leo Turner at the break. Hertford won a 57th minute free kick as the game contiued at a high pace. Lee Roberts was the man fouled, and he took the free kick, which found defender Matt Watts, who saw his shot blocked at close range. WGC's Antony Beamish got in a header from a good cross, but Pat O'Brien made a good save.
Tom Neill was booked for clumsy challenge on 65 minutes, and then Mark Teasdale replaced Kevin Ashwood after 68 minutes. WGC's Jason Williams saw yellow in the later stages of the game. Unaccustomed both to a home win and a home clean sheet, the fans were chewing their nails, but after Paul Taylor had made a saving block on the line, the win was sealed on 89 minutes by LEE ROBERTS. The winger beat the offside trap onto a brilliant through ball from Simon Eden, ran on and chipped 'keeper Simon Bartley to make it 2-0.
Hertford's reward for this win is a last 16 place at home to Division 1 side Stoney Stratford Town, in November.

Final score: Hertford Town 2 Welwyn Garden City 0
